Kayaking
.Kayaking on one of Portage Lakes many tributary Rivers and Creeks

10%

That's the amount of time the average American spends outside!  Come visit Arrowhead Cove and reconnect with Mother Earth.       Here are a few suggestions.      Walk barefoot through the grass.   Sit on the deck and watch the sunset.  Glide over the water in a kayak.  Gaze at the stars.  Relax with a campfire.  Watch the deer, swan, bats, hummingbirds, fireflies, frogs, or dragonflies.  Gather herbs from the garden.  Take a walk in the woods.  Feel the energy of a brisk, fall breeze or a warming, spring sun.  Enjoy a hot beverage while swinging on the patio.  Search for arrowheads.  Listen to geese, crickets, tree frogs, songbirds, or falling acorns.  Smell the honey locust in spring, fresh basil in summer, and drying cornfields in autumn.   What have you been missing?

HAVE YOU EVER TRIED KAYAKING?

It's easy to learn, has a very low impact on the environment, and is only as strenuous as you make it!  With our recent mild winters, it's possible to kayak year round.  In a kayak, you can paddle places that are unreachable in almost any other type of watercraft.  Pack binoculars, a GPS unit, a fishing pole, or your camera--and a sandwich--and set off on a grand adventure!  We can show you the basic paddling techniques, give you a lake or river map or guidebook, and suggest some interesting trips, depending on the season.  Portage Lake is part of St. Joseph County's Heritage Water Trail system with historical markers located along Portage River from the lake outlet to the St. Joseph River in Three Rivers; and we have hopes that the trail will be extended upriver from the lake in the near future.  We have access to kayaks that you may rent, or you may bring your own.  Either way, it's an awesome experience.

GEO-CACHING AT ARROWHEAD COVE!

Another great sport that is gaining in popularity and we have everything you need to get started!  Bring your own GPS unit or rent ours for $10 per day.  We have "caches" hidden on site and upriver for you to practice on.  Then you can select from dozens of registered sites in our local area where you can find hidden "treasures"!  Set aside an hour or a full day to give geo-caching a try.  It's great for families, for couples, and for individuals, and available every season of the year.

EXPERIENCE YOUR AGRICULTURAL ROOTS WITH A FARMSTAY
AT ARROWHEAD COVE!

Watch this page as we develop a week full of activities down on the farm available approximately every other week from April through October 2007!  St. Joseph County, MI is not only River Country, it also contains an unusual diversity of farm industries.  We still have many irrigated, conventional acres in corn, beans, and wheat along with two, large seed corn companies.  Our area leads the country in greenhouse production of bedding plants.  But we also have traditional Amish farms, organic farms, fruit farms, tree farms, flower farms, roadside markets, and common (cattle, pigs, horses) and unusual (buffalo, llama) livestock farms.  We are putting together a program that will allow you to experience many of these enterprises in addition to  working the soil and/or harvesting crops.  To culminate your week, you will have the opportunity to take home locally grown produce (when is season).  If you would like to put your name in early for a farmstay week, please contact us!  Farmstay weeks begin Sunday evening and end Friday morning.
