OUR GUEST ROOMS

All rooms feature private baths and queen or king size beds.  All indoor areas are non-smoking and pet free.   We have chosen to avoid carpeting for the benefit of guests with allergies but have radiant floor heat to keep the space toasty-warm in winter.

HEALTH AND VITALITY   This beautiful, south-facing room is on the main floor and the bathroom, shower, and bedroom are all wheelchair accessible.  The queen bed features a Nikken mattress, endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association.  Guests with pacemakers should not use this room for the mattress contains magnets.  Other Nikken products are featured in this room, as well as wellness books and recordings.

JOY AND INSPIRATION  This second floor room features a sleeping loft for one or two children and the option of a king bed or two twin beds for the adults in the party.  It has a window air conditioner available, please request it well in advance.
It has wooden floors, vaulted ceiling and beautiful structural elements of our timber-frame design.  It shares the sitting area overlooking the lake with our Peace and Prosperity Room.

PEACE AND PROSPERITY  This second-floor room offers a queen size bed.  It also has wooden floors, vaulted ceiling and timber-frame elements in a slightly smaller space.  It features our collection of books on peace and prosperity and decorative pieces to fit the theme.  It shares the open sitting area with our Joy and Inspiration Room.

COVE COTTAGE  Sleeps up to six, with a full kitchen, air conditioning and heat.  Large family room has great views of the lake.  Grill and picnic table included.  Enjoy everything the lake has to offer with your family, or use this as your base camp for a hunting or fishing vacation.  Bass, crapie, bluegill and others are plentiful in Portage Lake and its tributaries.  Our area has several game areas and hunters have great luck with waterfowl, deer, rabbit, and turkey.

PLANTS PROVIDE HEALTHY AIR
Houseplants clean the air providing a wonderful filtering system.  We have many types at
Arrowhead Cove.  One of my favorite houseplants is commonly called the "Arrowhead" plant (Syngonium).  I have them in every room and guests are invited to take one home (donations accepted).  They are easy care, they like to dry out between waterings and seem to do well in bright and filtered light.

Outdoors, our "Cove" also features a water plant called the "Arrowhead".  It is one of the "emergent" water plants that helps to filter out pollutants in the water and reduce algae.  We also have water lilies and some cattails starting to grow in the cove.

WINTER HEATING AT ARROWHEAD COVE
We are very pleased with our radiant floor heating system.  Because it doesn't dry the air, we find it comfortable with the thermostat set at 60 degrees for the two of us, and 65 degrees when we have guests.  (That seems to be equivalent to 70 degrees in traditional heating systems.)  In addition, we keep adding plants to our indoor environment to add moisture and oxygen and to remove carbon dioxide and toxins from the air.  A great book on houseplants is, "How to Grow Fresh Air", by Dr. B.C. Wolverton.  Our SIPS panels on walls (6 inches) and roof (10 inches) significantly reduce the amount of heat needed to keep us warm.
On sunny winter days, our south facing rooms often warm up five degrees from solar gain.  (Our roof overhang prevents this in the summer when the sun is higher in the sky.)  We also enjoy solar hot water when the sun shines, even on the coldest winter day.

SUMMER COOLING AT ARROWHEAD COVE

We have spent two summer seasons in our timber frame home.  After much consideration, we have decided not to install air conditioning units in our guest rooms.  But, read on to discover why that doesn't mean it is uncomfortably hot!  (Cove Cottage is cooled with a "heat pump".)  Since we do not have any ductwork, we didn't have the option of "central air" when we built.
We are using many "earth-friendly" ways to cool our living space.  We are having great success with using natural ventilation.  We open our windows in the evening and the air cools down quickly.  We close them in the morning and enjoy the shade provided by a large oak tree.  We have ceiling fans in every guest room.  It keeps us comfortable at night, and we believe it has done the same for our guests.  We enjoy the breeze off the lake and its cooling effect on the entire property.  We have installed a retractable awning on the sunny, west deck and will put it to the test in the summer of 2008.
We hope that you will join us as we live without burning the additional coal it would take to artificially cool our home.  Perhaps you will take home some ideas of your own that will save energy and lower your cost for energy
